About Ithaka…
An interesting and versatile performer, Italian-born pianist and composer Cristiana Pegoraro returns to Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall with her composition set ITHAKA, The Journey of a Modern Ulysses.
The music is inspired by the poem “Ithaka” by the great Greek poet Constantinos Petrou Kavafis (1863-1933) who compares the voyage of Ulysses to the journey of our lives. Like Ulysses’ voyage, so man’s voyage is rich in discoveries and adventures, goals to reach and lessons to learn. The most important thing is not to reach the goal, but everything we learn along the way.
Each of the musical pieces composed by Cristiana Pegoraro represents an important aspect of our life: the departure, the expectation, the choice, the discovery, the knowledge, the journey, the understanding, and the wisdom.
ITHAKA by Cristiana Pegoraro was born from the need to unite people belonging to the diverse cultures, regions and traditions from the Mediterranean. The Mediterranean is a place with a potential to express solidarity, welcome and friendship, and serves as a beacon of peace among its peoples. It is a sea which unifies instead of dividing, and a symbol of a world-wide dialogue and understanding in histories which are different, but which are all about the same universal subject: Mankind.
Ithaka will travel throughout the Mediterranean to present its musical message of peace and dialogue in the ports of historical capitals and the striking ancient theaters of Italy, Spain, Greece, Cyprus, Malta, Israel, Albania, Lebanon.
This innovative program also features selections from ‘The Four Seasons’ by Vivaldi and ‘Largo al Factotum’ from ‘The Barber of Seville’ by Rossini in Cristiana’s own arrangements for piano, the famous ‘Moonlight Sonata’ by Beethoven, and selections from Chopin’s Preludes.
