Elyjha Chandler and Christian Perkins Swim for Life

We joined our Families For Safe Cities (FSC) members Aminatu Noah and Kibret Perkins for a press conference with Mayor Adams who announced the city’s $5.5 million dollar investment in the “Swim for Life” program in honor and memory of their sons, Elyjha Chandler and Christian Perkins, who tragically lost their lives at Riis Beach last June. The newly named “Elyjha Chandler and Christian Perkins Swim for Life” program will be held at Erasmus High School in Flatbush, Brooklyn, providing swimming classes to an additional 4,800 youth, bringing the total number over 18,000 youth served by the program to keep families safe during the Summer when their young people are at beaches and pools.

We are deeply shocked and disheartened to share that the Mt. Zion Church of God 7th Day’s church van has been stolen. This van is more than just a vehicle—it serves their community by transporting members to services, outreach events, and vital programs. Its loss is a heavy blow to the work we do and the people we serve.

We are appealing to the conscience of our community: If you have any information regarding the whereabouts of the van, please come forward. Contact 718-284-1097, your tip—no matter how small—could make a difference.

The goal of the project is to reduce hate crime victimization by understanding how hate crime victims and their communities can be better supported and how these crimes can be prevented. The research team would love to hear directly from people who have experienced a hate crime – NOT about what happened during the crime/incident, but about what happened after, who you told, and what kind of support you received. The interview will be around 45 minutes and you will receive a $50 gift card for participation. Participation is voluntary and your answers and identity will be kept confidential. You can skip any questions or stop the interview any time.
