A new profile in Artsy tells the story of our founders, Susan and Michael Hort, and how a family tragedy became a lifelong commitment to supporting artists and people living with cancer. After their daughter Rema died of cancer in 1995, Susan and Michael founded the Rema Hort Mann Fund to honor her life and her deep love of artists. Thirty years later, that mission continues to grow. This milestone year also marks the launch of our Artists Living with Cancer Grant, a new third grant that brings RHMF’s two longstanding missions together—supporting artists and supporting people living with cancer. The grant was inspired in part by this year’s gala honoree, celebrated contemporary artist Jacolby Satterwhite, who has lived with cancer and its complications since he was 11. Jacolby is the inaugural recipient of the grant, receiving $25,000 jointly funded by RHMF and the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation. We are incredibly proud to celebrate Susan Hort at this year’s gala and to honor the family, artists, supporters, and community who have carried this work forward for three decades.
