Scientists have long dreamed of discovering the alchemy by which chemicals can be turned into life. On Wednesday, a team at the University of Minnesota announced that it had taken a major step toward that vision.

Blending together dozens of ingredients, the researchers have synthesized simple cells that feed, grow, reproduce and compete with one another for food. If these cells are not yet fully alive, they have most of the hallmarks of life.

“Life is not binary,” said Kate Adamala, a synthetic biologist who led the research. “That’s why I’m hesitant to call this ‘alive.’ There’s no clear line, as much as we would love it to be.”

Until now, scientists had never mastered the recipe for a cell that can perform so many functions, said John Glass, a synthetic biologist at the J. Craig Venter Institute in La Jolla, Calif., who was not involved in the study.

“It is dazzling that she has put these things all together,” he said.

Drew Endy, a synthetic biologist at Stanford University, said, “It’s a cell that was built, not born. It’s constructed, but it does what cells do.”

NEWARK, NJ – January 01, 2020 – In celebration of its 20th anniversary, The Positive Community (TPC) is hosting the first annual Great American Emancipation Day Awards Banquet honoring three extraordinary individuals for their exemplary community service with the Torchbearer Award: Hon. Mildred C. Crump, president Newark Municipal Council; Hazel N. Dukes, president New York State Conference, NAACP; and Rev. Calvin McKinney, general secretary National Baptist Convention, USA on Wednesday, January 1, 2020, from 2 pm-6pm ET in the Grand Ballroom at The Robert Treat Hotel in Newark, NJ.
Joining the three honorees will be organization honorees: African American Chamber of Commerce of New Jersey, John Harmon, president; African-American Clergy and Elected Officials (AACEO Brooklyn), Rev. Robert Waterman, president; and Friends of Harlem Hospital, Rev. Jacques A. DeGraff, president.
The awards banquet purposely takes place on New Year’s Day, an important date in American history, especially for African Americans. On New Year’s Day, January 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation declaring slaves within the rebellious states free. The Emancipation Day Awards Banquet is sponsored by Prudential Financial, AARP, United, PSE&G, McDonald’s, Berkley College, and Two Fish and Five Loaves.
“Prudential’s partnership with The Positive Community is steeped in our alignment around financial literacy and creating pathways to financial wellness for all,” says Shané Harris, Vice President of Corporate Giving and President of the Prudential Foundation. “We are particularly honored to be a part of TPC’s Great American Emancipation Day Awards Banquet to celebrate and highlight the progress of the Black community. We congratulate The Positive Community for two decades and service to the Black community, and we salute the awardees for their dedication and service to this continued progress, particularly in our hometown of Newark.”

TIME: 2;00pm – 6:00pm
WHERE: The Robert Treat Hotel
50 Park Place, Newark, NJ
BACKGROUND: “January 1 is a date of deep meaning to African Americans,” says Adrian A. Council, co-founder and publisher of The Positive Community. “It is our day of liberation, the start of our freedom journey. Without this day there would be no Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., no Motown, no Juneteenth, no Godfather of Soul no Queen of Soul.” The vision of TPC co-founders Council and Editor-in- Chief Jean Nash Wells was to create a balanced medium that accurately reflects the community building efforts of churches, small businesses, corporations, and concerned individuals.
In 2012, TPC created and introduced The Cultural Narrative. Written to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Great Emancipation, the document is an account of America’s freedom journey condensed into 281 words. On New Year’s Eve 2012, hundreds of churches participated in TPC’s Great Watch Night Initiative which involved singing the Negro National Anthem; having a young person read The Cultural Narrative before the congregation; and concluding with everyone exiting the sanctuary singing the Negro hymn We’ve Come This Far By Faith. What started as an initiative is now an established tradition among many churches and clergy groups.
Launched in 2000 by Adrian Council, Publisher and Jean Nash Wells, Editor-in-Chief, The Positive Community (TPC) is the only faith-based lifestyle magazine targeted to the African American consumer in the New York/New Jersey market. For nearly two decades, the magazine has delivered on its tagline, focusing on Good News from the Church and the Community.

I ASKED MY OWN GRANDCHILDREN WHO ARE OUT OF TOWN WITH COLLEGE AND SCHOOL ACTIVITIES WHAT KIND OF IMPACT DO THEY WANT TO MAKE IN THE WORLD.

JULIA SAID Being sixteen years old limits my perception of what I think I am capable of. Adults are typically the ones to make significant changes, and kids are the inheritors of their designs. I don’t want to build a new system, though; I want to fix the underlying fractures present in our current ones. Through small acts of kindness enacted by every individual, the world would ultimately become a better place. Even so, it goes beyond just kindness and rather calls for a rebirth of humanity. I want to play a small role in simply being a good human: helping others when they are at their lowest point, understanding perspectives, and connecting. We, as a collective, share the human experience; it should be all of our duties to preserve it.

JASON SAID I want to leave the world a better place than I found it, something I believe is everyone’s individual responsibility. Instead of just consuming, I want to produce and contribute to society. Overall, I want to be a net giver. I want to be there and help those most in need and those at their lowest points. And I want to make society more prosperous by building products that improve society

PAUL THANK YOU MIA, JULIA, HUDSON AND JASON.

ROB gives Hudson and Mia a hug planet, BALL and pic. Paul GIVE THE RECOGNITION CERTIFICATE.

We are pleased to invite you uur upcoming virtual National Quarterly Forum: Creating a Legacy of Public Safety in Urban Cities on Monday, February 23rd 2PM-3PM EST.   We have invited Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez (NYC) who often refers to himself as a “progressive prosecutor,” and speaks largely about his office’s efforts to prevent violence, rather than prosecute it and the nations’ second black Governor of the US, Gov. Albert Bryan, (USVI).  You can register using the link [HERE] to get into the meeting room.

Together, we will explore how faith-based leadership, community partnerships, and proactive prevention efforts can shape a legacy of public safety that restores hope and protects generations to come.  Our goal is clear: to move beyond temporary fixes and build a lasting legacy of safety, equity, and opportunity in our cities.

Thank you for your continued commitment to peace, justice, and community healing. We look forward to gathering with you on the 23rd.

Largest Student-Led Organization Tackles Food Waste to Feed Hungry Families at San Francisco’s Biggest Tailgate Party

San Francisco, CA – As excitement builds for the Big Game in Santa Clara, local tailgate parties are set to take center stage. Among the festivities, Food Recovery Network (FRN) sees these events as vital opportunities to combat hunger in our communities. At Guy Fieri’s Flavortown Tailgate, Hellmann’s Mayonnaise and FRN will work together to ensure that no surplus food goes to waste, benefiting families in need in the Bay Area.

For the third consecutive year, Hellmann’s is partnering with FRN—which has recovered surplus food from the Big Game for multiple years—to rescue high-quality food from Big Game tailgates and redirect it to communities in need.

“We’re proud to partner once again with Food Recovery Network to make food recovery part of the Big Game experience,” said Jessica Grigoriou, Senior Vice President of Condiments Marketing in North America, Unilever. “By rescuing high-quality surplus food from events like Guy Fieri’s Flavortown Tailgate and inspiring people to see the value in their own leftovers, we’re showing how small actions can add up to real impact—because good food should be enjoyed, not wasted.”

Last year, FRN achieved remarkable success during the Big Game, recovering 12,348 pounds of surplus food from two Hellmann’s-supported recovery events in one day, equating to approximately 10,290 meals that were provided to the New Orleans Mission. The recovery included high-value items such as seafood, chicken, and butter—essential ingredients that significantly impact local organizations fighting hunger.

This year, FRN is ready to make an even larger impact in the Bay Area. FRN staff, alongside dedicated students and alumni from the University of San Francisco, Cal Poly, San Francisco State University, and Case Western Reserve, will be on-site at Guy Fieri’s Flavortown Tailgate. All recovered food will be donated to the Delancey Street Foundation and Samaritan House, vital resources for people experiencing food insecurity in the area.

Regina Harmon, CEO of Food Recovery Network, expressed her gratitude, stating, “Hellmann’s has been unwavering in their support of our food recovery efforts over the past three years and in our mission to raise awareness about preventing food waste. Their partnership has been instrumental in our efforts to recover high-quality surplus food, enabling us to help local families experiencing hunger. Together, we are making a meaningful impact on both hunger and sustainability.”

FRN’s commitment to large-scale food recovery extends beyond the festivities of the football game. A recent partnership with Gaylord Hotels in Washington, D.C., and San Diego has resulted in over 100,000 pounds of food saved over the last few years. Ryan Verhulst, Hotel Manager at Gaylord National, stated, “Food recovery is essential to reaching our sustainability goals. As part of the Marriott family, we emphasize nurturing our world and reducing our environmental footprint. This includes decreasing our food waste and increasing our contribution to our community. Partnerships like the one we have with Food Recovery Network help us reach our goals while also giving back to local families in need.”

Food Recovery Network (FRN) is the largest student-led movement recovering surplus food and ending hunger in the U.S. We unite 8,000+ college students, food suppliers, farmers, and local businesses across the U.S. in the fight against climate change and hunger by recovering surplus food from across the supply chain and donating it to local nonprofit organizations that feed people experiencing hunger.

New York, NY (Friday, December 5, 2025) – Producer Gene Fisch Jr announced that A
Pitch From Satchel Paige, the solo show about the life of one of the greatest baseball
pitchers of all time, will lead off Black History Month at Carnegie Hall. The one-night-only
special performance, starring Russell C. Holt as the legendary Paige, will take place at
Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall on Monday, February 2, at 7:30 p.m.
“We are in a time that pleads for a real superhero, a hero that can be appreciated by
everyone and who will inspire us to be awesome. Satchel is that hero,” said Gene Fisch Jr
“Leading his team to the World Series, pitching until the incredible age of 59, and doing it
all with distinction and class made him a legend – and in this moment of negativity and
strife in America, we need superheroes like him more than ever.”
“Many people know the uplifting story of Jackie Robinson crossing the color line, but fewer
know about the struggle of those that came before Jackie,” said playwright Jim Keller.
“Satchel’s story is that of hundreds of amazing black athletes who never got the chance to
show the world what they could do.”
Before there was a hit by Jackie Robinson, there was a Pitch from Satchel Paige. A Pitch
From Satchel Paige is a solo play by Loren and Jim Keller that brings the audience face
to-face with one of the greatest baseball pitchers of all time – and certainly one of the best
storytellers. Paige’s story is one of overcoming the hardships of poverty and bigotry
through talent, humor, and determination. “Satch” weaves a tale of challenge, inequality,
accomplishment, and change, using exciting baseball moments and historical events to
tell his story.
A Pitch From Satchel Paige previously made its world premiere for a limited engagement
in April 2024 at the Paul Robeson Theatre in Buffalo, New York, after garnering attention
with a 2018 launch at the New York New Works Theatre Festival.

Loren Keller, on a two-person drama, Whitman/Wilde. Jim is writing two musical
adaptations from film to the stage and working on an original comedic musical, tentatively
called That Senior Moment.
Gene Fisch Jr (Producer) has spent two decades advocating for underrepresented voices
to reach the stage and to provide exposure to the arts for those not typically given such
opportunities. He regularly takes students from the South Bronx to the MET, to NYC
theatre, and now to Carnegie Hall. He is a facilitator for LGBTQ shows reaching the stage,
has invested and helped bring dozens of shows written by women, people of color, and
those who could not afford to produce their work in an effort to literally change the
landscape of theater. CFO of Alpha Innovations, adjunct prof “Best Instructor” award at
