QUEENS, NY — July 30, 2026 — The Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival in New York (HKDBF-NY) will host the 2026 Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival in New York, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, August 8–9, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., rain or shine.
HKDBF 2026: YEAR OF THE FIRE HORSE
The 2026 festival celebrates the Year of the Fire Horse, symbolizing energy, passion, courage and bold transformation—a fitting theme for a festival that brings together athletes, families, businesses, community organizations and cultural leaders from across New York City and beyond.
As one of the largest and oldest dragon boat festivals in the United States, HKDBF-NY continues to draw thousands of spectators, athletes, families and media outlets to Queens for a weekend celebrating sport, culture, heritage and community.
A WEEKEND OF CHAMPIONSHIP RACING
Following the Team Time Trials, the excitement continues during the festival on August 8–9.
Teams will compete throughout both days from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., culminating Sunday with the challenging U.S. Dragon Boat Open Championship Race.
The 2026 racing program will feature a diverse lineup of competitive and invitational races, including the new:

• Hong Kong Teak Boat Dragon Boat Movement 40th Anniversary Invitational
The 40th Anniversary Invitational honors the original teak dragon boats gifted by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in New York, recognizing the history and enduring relationship between Hong Kong and the New York dragon boat community.
The festival will also feature the Municipal Invitational, bringing together teams representing elected officials and government agencies, including the NYC Comptroller’s Office, New York State Attorney General’s Office, New York State of Health, NYC Department of Transportation, NYC Department of Correction, New York City Department of Design & Construction, Board of Elections in the City of New York, NYC Department of Sanitation and NYC Parks.
Additional special races include the Michael Lau Legacy Race, David Archer Legacy Race and Sponsor’s Challenge, along with Corporate, Health Care, Education, Women’s, HK Family, Non-Profit, Media and Regulated Industry Invitationals.
CHARITY RACE RETURNS
The popular Charity Race returns in 2026, giving participating teams an opportunity to compete while supporting charitable organizations selected by the winning teams.
Over the years, the HKDBF-NY Charity Race has contributed more than $300,000 to New York City charities, demonstrating the festival’s continuing commitment to community service and philanthropy.
OPENING DAY PARADE & DRAGON EYE-DOTTING CEREMONY
The festival officially opens Saturday, August 8, with a spectacular Dragon Dance Dragon Dance Troupe performance by the Wan Chi Ming Hung Gar Institute, leading participating teams in a colorful parade toward the Main Stage.
The parade will culminate in the traditional Dragon Eye-Dotting Ceremony, a centuries-old tradition symbolizing the awakening and blessing of the dragon for competition.

The Coach Clinic provides instruction on race strategy, paddling techniques, team development, safety protocols, and best practices for building successful dragon boat programs. The event serves as a key training opportunity for both new and experienced coaches leading teams competing in this year’s festival.

A veteran of the 1980s Soho art scene is helping to prepare people to go to Mars.
Reid Stowe, who was pals with Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Julian Schnabel, Anthony Haden-Guest and other staples of the Downtown art explosion, also became an elite endurance sailor.
And it turns out the mental rigors of spending over a thousand days at sea may be the best way to prepare the mind for the voyage to the Red Planet.
“The seafarers of today provide a role model for the spacefarers of tomorrow,” Stowe, 72, told Page Six.

Stowe, who spent a record 1,152 consecutive days at sea without touching land, now takes aspiring astronauts, engineers and space scientists on ocean voyages designed to test the resilience, self-reliance and mental toughness needed for deep-space travel.
“In the space community it’s called analog training,” he explained. “You’re not actually in space, but you’re recreating many of the same physical and psychological challenges.”
Unlike large ships, Stowe says a small sailboat leaves people exposed to isolation, confinement, uncertainty and the constant need to solve problems with limited resources — conditions he believes closely mirror life aboard a spacecraft headed for Mars.
In fact, Stowe believes sea voyages and missions to Mars are so similar — in both duration and the psychological challenges they present — that he named his record-setting expedition “Mars Ocean Odyssey.”

Many of the people he trains hope to work in space exploration as engineers, astrobiologists or future astronauts. Stowe says some specifically want ocean experience on their résumés because future Mars crews will need people capable of building, repairing and maintaining equipment while living in extreme isolation.
According to Stowe, humans could reach Mars within the next 10 to 15 years — and the 72-year-old even believes he could still be around to captain the first crewed mission himself. “I believe I am the most qualified person to captain the first crewed mission to Mars,” he said, adding, “That’s still one of my goals.”
The unusual career marks a dramatic second act for Stowe, who was once part of Manhattan’s legendary 1980s art scene. Basquiat admired him enough to paint a life-size portrait of him in 1985, writing “Reid” across the canvas before giving it to him.

The 5th World Water Festival will take place on September 23, 2026 (Autumn Equinox / Japan Time) at the KFC Hall in Ryogoku, Tokyo, a heartland of traditional Edo culture.
Ryogoku is a district where Edo culture once flourished. With the widespread adoption of education through terakoya (temple schools), exceptional public safety, a thorough culture of recycling, and a fully circular lifestyle so refined that it was hailed as a “city without waste”— the people of Edo held a deep wisdom for living in harmony with nature. Together, they cultivated a culture that was beautiful, stylish, and sustainable.
At the same time, this land bears a poignant history. Located right next to the venue of the 5th World Water Festival is the Tokyo Metropolitan Memorial Hall, which honors the spirits of many souls lost during the Great Kanto Earthquake and the Tokyo air raids. It is a place where a vibrant cultural legacy and a history of overcoming profound sorrow exist side by side.
That is Ryogoku.
I feel a profound connection in being able to host the 5th World Water Festival in this very location. This year’s gathering will be a truly special occasion, where our gratitude to our ancestors and our prayers for the future align.

Special Guest Speaker: Film Producer Tetsu Shiratori, renowned for his deep insights into both Edo culture and environmental issues, will take the stage. His words, born from a dedicated commitment to the future of the Earth, will bring tremendous depth to the World Water Festival.
Global Live Broadcasts: We will once again connect live across the globe. Wendy Rice from Australia and Christina Rindsjö from Sweden are preparing prayer ceremonies in their respective lands. Resonating in prayer with the world in real time on the Autumn Equinox—this is truly the moment where the world becomes one through water.
Prayer for Water & Ancestors: The “Prayer for Water” will once again be led by Nene-san, just as it was last year. The deep, unifying prayer that enveloped the entire venue last time will resonate once more—this time radiating outward from the ancient land of Edo to the entire world. In addition to our prayer for water, we will send our heartfelt prayers of healing and solace to the spirits of those who passed away on this land, and to all the souls lost in wars and natural disasters around the globe. It will be a sacred moment where past, present, and future softly weave together through water.
Indigenous Wisdom & Video Messages: We will present video messages sent from all around the world. Every year, the community of people who resonate with the vision of the World Water Festival continues to grow. The wisdom of Indigenous peoples who have protected the Earth, nature, and water for generations serves as an invaluable guidepost for us today.
Finale: The grand finale will feature world-renowned musician Hiroki Okano. The stream of prayer that began with “CONVERGENCE” on the Summer Solstice flows directly into the 5th World Water Festival on the Autumn Equinox. Together with Hiroki’s music, the light of a new 26,000-year cycle will radiate outward. I am deeply honored that we can welcome this moment together.
The World Water Festival is an initiative to advance, step by step, the vision that Masaru Emoto devoted his life to: World Peace Through Water.

Solar-powered innovation has shown year-long stability with zero utility energy costs, thanks to a new type of photothermal material
NEW: Move over, bottled water – China’s new solar tech just made desalination cheaper.
Chinese researchers have developed a photothermal material that weaves nanoparticles into a 3D evaporation structure, dramatically boosting solar desalination efficiency.
The breakthrough absorbs 90.2% of solar energy while slashing energy consumption by 45.7%.
In year-long outdoor trials, the prototype ran entirely on sunlight—no grid power, no fossil fuels—and successfully irrigated five square meters of farmland through a full growth cycle. Zero energy costs. Zero emissions. Just the sun.
The cost of producing fresh water is already below the price of bottled water—and the advantage only grows with scale.
A Chinese research team has developed a solar-powered seawater desalination system that could produce drinking water at a lower cost than bottled water.
Researchers from the Institute of Process Engineering (IPE) under the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Shenzhen University developed the technology, which uses sunlight instead of electricity to convert seawater into fresh water.
The study, published in the journal Advanced Materials on June 21, tackles one of desalination’s biggest obstacles: the high energy required to produce fresh water. Most desalination plants rely on reverse osmosis, a process that uses electricity to force seawater through membranes that allow water molecules to pass while blocking salt.
The Chinese team instead embedded nanoparticles into a three-dimensional photothermal material that absorbs sunlight and converts it into heat, allowing seawater to evaporate and condense into fresh water without drawing electricity from the power grid.

Laboratory tests showed the material achieved a solar absorption rate of 90.2% while reducing the energy needed to evaporate the same amount of seawater by 45.7% compared with conventional methods.
In a field trial, the system produced more than 20 liters of fresh water a day using only natural sunlight, enough to meet the basic daily drinking needs of about 10 people. The water met World Health Organization drinking-water standards, IPE said in a press release, according to the South China Morning Post.
It also irrigated a five-square-meter plot of farmland throughout an entire growing season without external power.
Based on a projected two-year operating period, the researchers estimated that producing fresh water would cost less than bottled water and the cost advantage would become even greater if the system were deployed on a larger scale or operated over longer periods.
IPE said the team is working to improve condensation efficiency and reduce system costs as it seeks to scale up the technology for water-scarce coastal areas, islands and remote regions.
The development comes as China expands its use of marine resources, including seawater desalination.
China’s seawater desalination capacity has surpassed 3 million metric tons per day, enough to meet the daily household water needs of about 15 million people, according to China Daily citing a report released earlier this month by the Ministry of Natural Resources.
The report said China had 167 seawater desalination projects operating in 2025 with a combined daily capacity of 3.077 million metric tons, up 221,000 metric tons from the previous year.

For decades, scientists suspected water secretly behaves like two different liquids. A new AI-powered study has finally caught it happening at the molecular level.
For years, scientists have suspected that, at the molecular level, water is two different liquids — a denser one and a less-dense one — that are constantly switching places. Catching real molecular evidence of this microscopic transformation has been hard. But now, with help from artificial intelligence, researchers say they’ve finally found it.
“It’s hard to imagine — here is just one water, right?” said Xiao Cheng Zeng, a physical chemist at the City University of Hong Kong and co-author of the new study, told Live Science while holding a water bottle in the air. That puzzle sent him digging through scientific literature, where he found the possible explanation: the two-state hypothesis. “That got my attention. We have literature to talk about it but no evidence.”
The findings, published June 4 in the journal Nature Physics, could not only prove this long-sought molecular change is real, but also help to explain dozens of water’s weird behaviors.
Most liquids become denser as they cool, but water behaves differently; it becomes denser until about 4 degrees Celsius, then starts to expand, which is why ice floats. Water also resists temperature changes better than similar liquids and has a viscosity that decreases under certain pressures. Scientists have documented various anomalies related to water and suspect they may be interconnected.
The two-state model is an attempt to be that unifying explanation.
A 30-year hunch
Zeng has been studying water since his postdoc days in the late 1990s, when he worked on liquid freezing. The two-state hypothesis itself came onto his radar later — around 2006, when he first encountered it at scientific conferences. But for years, he set it aside as too difficult to tackle directly. That changed roughly around 2016, as researchers began reporting experimental evidence that supercooled water could split into distinct high-density and low-density forms.
Around two and a half years ago, Zeng handed the problem to Liwen Li, a postdoctoral researcher in his lab. Rather than repeating the conventional approaches other groups had already struggled with, Li suggested the use of “unsupervised deep learning” — AI trained to spot patterns in data without being told what to look for.
“So AI [is] forced to learn — to use [its] knowledge to create, to explore,” Zeng told Live Science.
The team ran massive molecular dynamics simulations, using the GROMACS simulation package. They tracked how hundreds of thousands of water molecules moved and interacted and generated tens of millions of data points.
“Traditionally, you may need a lot of students to figure that out. … With computers and AI, it took [Li] maybe a year and a half,” Zeng said. Without AI, he estimated, the same analysis might have taken closer to a decade.

The AI came back with “reaction coordinates” — a small number of variables, distilled out of all that molecular motion, that describe exactly how a water molecule’s local arrangement shifts from the denser structure to the looser one and back. They plotted the system’s behavior along those coordinates to see the shape of the conversion. That included the number and location of energy barriers, or saddle points, that molecules have to cross to make the switch.
Two paths up the mountain
The team found that the path the two structures take to convert into each other changes depending on certain conditions. Most of the time, the switch happens along what the researchers call a “semi-loop” pathway, with a single energy barrier to cross.
But near the boundary between high-density and low-density water — the same kind of threshold where ice and liquid water coexist at 32 degrees Fahrenheit (zero degrees Celsius) — the molecules can take a more roundabout “full-loop” path, with three separate barriers instead of one.
Zeng compared it to hiking a mountain that’s been sliced in half, with a gentle slope on one side and a sheer cliff on the other. Most hikers stick to the slope; that’s the semi-loop. But near the boundary where the two halves meet, it’s as if the mountain were becoming whole again, letting hikers circle the entire peak. That’s the full loop.
Zeng and his team are now building a more rigorous machine-learning model to confirm the result. They hope to eventually connect it to properties like density, viscosity and temperature.
Confirming the structure in real water won’t be simple. Zeng said it will likely require new and sensitive experimental techniques — the kind developed by labs like Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, which previously found indirect spectroscopic evidence for water’s two-state behavior.
“Once we have this … confirmed by experiment,” he said, “this model can be used to [understand] how water interacts with nature.”
Since most biological and pharmaceutical processes happen in water, a better understanding of water’s molecular structure could shed light on how dissolved salts, proteins, and drug molecules interact in solution. “These interactions are vital for injectable drugs and cell function,” he noted, but applying this knowledge to practical uses is still a long way off.

]]>In ancient times the Japanese divided their year into 24 periods based on classical Chinese sources. The natural world comes to life in the even more vividly named 72 subdivisions of the traditional Japanese calendar.
The 24 divisions are each split again into three for a total of 72 kō that last around five days each. The names were also originally taken from China, but they did not always match up well with the local climate. In Japan, they were eventually rewritten in 1685 by the court astronomer Shibukawa Shunkai. In their present form, they offer a poetic journey through the Japanese year in which the land awakens and blooms with life and activity before returning to slumber.
The dates in the following table are approximate and may vary by one day depending on the year. There are no standard readings in Japanese for the kanji names of the 72 kō, so other sources may give different readings.

Yo! We just powered concert #959 with clean energy!
I teamed up with the incredible Australian band Lime Cordiale at the legendary El Rey Theatre, and it was a massive success!
Then… we made history.
For the first time ever, we powered a show at The Roxy Theatre—yes, the ICONIC Roxy on Sunset Blvd—with clean/renewable energy.
That’s never been done before. Ever.
This was a first.
The Roxy has helped launch the careers of legends like Guns N’ Roses, Adele, Bruce Springsteen, and Bob Marley… and now, I’m beyond honored to say this night marked the start of my chapter in that legacy.
Big love to Green Sports Alliance for coming together with us to unite music and sports and amplify the message of sustainability.
This was the official kickoff to our partnership in 2025—this is decarbonization in action.
We previewed some new songs from my upcoming album “DecArbonYzed,” and once again proved that concerts can be clean, green, and game-changing.
