The buoyant mood across Manhattan is contagious—the Knicks’ incredible playoff run, the stretch of gorgeous weather, and the excitement building ahead of the World Cup are combining to make this a memorable spring.

I haven’t had the opportunity (or more accurately, the cash) to catch a Knicks game this season. But I did tell The New York Times that when New Yorkers are celebrating a winning team, it’s maybe a little harder to build support for legislation I sponsored in the State Senate to end Madison Square Garden’s indefensible property tax exemption, a giveaway that has cost taxpayers nearly $1 billion so far. And the Garden’s owner, James Dolan, continues the Orwellian face-scanning surveillance to keep critics and perceived adversaries out of the arena—so perhaps I wouldn’t be able to get in anyway!

World Cup preparations, meanwhile, is moving full speed ahead. This week, I joined Governor Hochul and Mayor Mamdani to dedicate a new soccer pitch for kids adjacent to Tavern on the Green—on what was once a Robert Moses parking lot.

I also enjoyed seeing so many at the Public Theater’s event on Monday night; I helped celebrate the 40th anniversary opening night at Central Park’s SummerStage; and attended the relighting of the Apollo Theater marquee. A great week so far—ONE MORE WIN!

Manhattan has a serious dog waste problem. If it seems like you’re seeing more and more dog waste left of the sidewalk instead of bagged and thrown out, you’re right – and we have the data to back it up. My team partnered with BetaNYC to analyze four years of dog waste complaints to 311 and discovered that these complaints have been steadily rising since 2022, with this past winter being the worst on record. A single day in February 2026 set the all-time record for dog waste complaints in one day.

When we zoomed in to the neighborhood level, we learned that Washington Heights and Inwood (Community District 12) experience the most complaints – 626 since January 2024 alone, and three times more than the neighborhood with the second highest number of complaints. But this isn’t because these neighborhoods are filled with dog owners who don’t care if their neighbors are scraping waste off their shoes. We found that CD 12 has the fewest public litter baskets and dog waste bag dispensers of anywhere in Manhattan, so of course dog waste is ending up on the sidewalks. And we see hot pockets of similar issues in other neighborhoods throughout the borough.

Manhattan World Cup Watch Parties

Join our office for two free FIFA World Cup Watch Parties in Manhattan. On Saturday, June 27th, swing by SummerStage in Central Park at 5pm for a live screening of Panama vs England, and then head uptown to United Palace for Colombia vs Portugal at 7:30pm. We’re excited to bring free watch parties to our borough!

Come visit our gallery at 1 Centre Street, 19th Floor South for a new exhibit with the Museum of Chinese in America, Faces of Change: Chinatown Photographs from the Museum of Chinese in America Archives, curated by Alan Chin

The Museum of Chinese in America’s photography collection is an invaluable archive documenting the residents of Chinatown through the mid and late 20th century. These were decades of dynamic change as the population increased and also fought to enter mainstream of American life. What’s also notable—аnd this is more easily seen intrinsically in these photographs rather than described—is just how NEW YORK Chinatown has always been, and is today.

Largest Student-Led Organization Tackles Food Waste to Feed Hungry Families at San Francisco’s Biggest Tailgate Party

San Francisco, CA – As excitement builds for the Big Game in Santa Clara, local tailgate parties are set to take center stage. Among the festivities, Food Recovery Network (FRN) sees these events as vital opportunities to combat hunger in our communities. At Guy Fieri’s Flavortown Tailgate, Hellmann’s Mayonnaise and FRN will work together to ensure that no surplus food goes to waste, benefiting families in need in the Bay Area.

For the third consecutive year, Hellmann’s is partnering with FRN—which has recovered surplus food from the Big Game for multiple years—to rescue high-quality food from Big Game tailgates and redirect it to communities in need.

“We’re proud to partner once again with Food Recovery Network to make food recovery part of the Big Game experience,” said Jessica Grigoriou, Senior Vice President of Condiments Marketing in North America, Unilever. “By rescuing high-quality surplus food from events like Guy Fieri’s Flavortown Tailgate and inspiring people to see the value in their own leftovers, we’re showing how small actions can add up to real impact—because good food should be enjoyed, not wasted.”

Last year, FRN achieved remarkable success during the Big Game, recovering 12,348 pounds of surplus food from two Hellmann’s-supported recovery events in one day, equating to approximately 10,290 meals that were provided to the New Orleans Mission. The recovery included high-value items such as seafood, chicken, and butter—essential ingredients that significantly impact local organizations fighting hunger.

This year, FRN is ready to make an even larger impact in the Bay Area. FRN staff, alongside dedicated students and alumni from the University of San Francisco, Cal Poly, San Francisco State University, and Case Western Reserve, will be on-site at Guy Fieri’s Flavortown Tailgate. All recovered food will be donated to the Delancey Street Foundation and Samaritan House, vital resources for people experiencing food insecurity in the area.

Regina Harmon, CEO of Food Recovery Network, expressed her gratitude, stating, “Hellmann’s has been unwavering in their support of our food recovery efforts over the past three years and in our mission to raise awareness about preventing food waste. Their partnership has been instrumental in our efforts to recover high-quality surplus food, enabling us to help local families experiencing hunger. Together, we are making a meaningful impact on both hunger and sustainability.”

FRN’s commitment to large-scale food recovery extends beyond the festivities of the football game. A recent partnership with Gaylord Hotels in Washington, D.C., and San Diego has resulted in over 100,000 pounds of food saved over the last few years. Ryan Verhulst, Hotel Manager at Gaylord National, stated, “Food recovery is essential to reaching our sustainability goals. As part of the Marriott family, we emphasize nurturing our world and reducing our environmental footprint. This includes decreasing our food waste and increasing our contribution to our community. Partnerships like the one we have with Food Recovery Network help us reach our goals while also giving back to local families in need.”

Food Recovery Network (FRN) is the largest student-led movement recovering surplus food and ending hunger in the U.S. We unite 8,000+ college students, food suppliers, farmers, and local businesses across the U.S. in the fight against climate change and hunger by recovering surplus food from across the supply chain and donating it to local nonprofit organizations that feed people experiencing hunger.

New York, NY (Friday, December 5, 2025) – Producer Gene Fisch Jr announced that A
Pitch From Satchel Paige, the solo show about the life of one of the greatest baseball
pitchers of all time, will lead off Black History Month at Carnegie Hall. The one-night-only
special performance, starring Russell C. Holt as the legendary Paige, will take place at
Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall on Monday, February 2, at 7:30 p.m.
“We are in a time that pleads for a real superhero, a hero that can be appreciated by
everyone and who will inspire us to be awesome. Satchel is that hero,” said Gene Fisch Jr
“Leading his team to the World Series, pitching until the incredible age of 59, and doing it
all with distinction and class made him a legend – and in this moment of negativity and
strife in America, we need superheroes like him more than ever.”
“Many people know the uplifting story of Jackie Robinson crossing the color line, but fewer
know about the struggle of those that came before Jackie,” said playwright Jim Keller.
“Satchel’s story is that of hundreds of amazing black athletes who never got the chance to
show the world what they could do.”
Before there was a hit by Jackie Robinson, there was a Pitch from Satchel Paige. A Pitch
From Satchel Paige is a solo play by Loren and Jim Keller that brings the audience face
to-face with one of the greatest baseball pitchers of all time – and certainly one of the best
storytellers. Paige’s story is one of overcoming the hardships of poverty and bigotry
through talent, humor, and determination. “Satch” weaves a tale of challenge, inequality,
accomplishment, and change, using exciting baseball moments and historical events to
tell his story.
A Pitch From Satchel Paige previously made its world premiere for a limited engagement
in April 2024 at the Paul Robeson Theatre in Buffalo, New York, after garnering attention
with a 2018 launch at the New York New Works Theatre Festival.

graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (2022). He holds a BA in
Media Studies (Video Production) with a Theatre minor from the University at Buffalo
(2014). Since beginning his career in 2016, Russell has performed in Black Bear
Island (Warren, Alleyway Theatre, 2025), A Pitch from Satchel Paige (Satchel Paige, Paul
Robeson Theatre, 2024), and The Homecoming (Lenny, Torn Space Theater, 2023). He
appears on screen in the Amazon Prime film Family Before Everything (Big Rick).
Verneice Turner (Director) Artie Awards (3) & Buffalo Spree Best Actress Award winner,
started out at the African American Cultural Center of Buffalo NY, and she continued her
study of the performing arts at SUNYAB. She has performed in productions in WNY &
beyond, including Off-Broadway (NFT & NEC) as well as directed. She was the Artistic
Director of The AACC ‘s Paul Robeson Theatre, from May 2023 to June 2024, mounting
several productions, including A Pitch From Satchel Paige.
Jim Keller (Playwright) is a professional communicator with a varied background. He
started as a city reporter in Upstate New York, then transitioned to sports marketing in
NYC where he worked with and wrote about some of the greatest athletes and sporting
events of recent generations. After serving as a spokesperson in Westchester County
government, he spent the bulk of his career with IBM communications. He has taught
writing courses at Marist College and Western Connecticut State University.
A Pitch from Satchel Paige was Jim’s first play and he also collaborated with his father,
Loren Keller, on a two-person drama, Whitman/Wilde. Jim is writing two musical
adaptations from film to the stage and working on an original comedic musical, tentatively
called That Senior Moment.
Gene Fisch Jr (Producer) has spent two decades advocating for underrepresented voices
to reach the stage and to provide exposure to the arts for those not typically given such
opportunities. He regularly takes students from the South Bronx to the MET, to NYC
theatre, and now to Carnegie Hall. He is a facilitator for LGBTQ shows reaching the stage,
has invested and helped bring dozens of shows written by women, people of color, and
those who could not afford to produce their work in an effort to literally change the
landscape of theater. CFO of Alpha Innovations, adjunct prof “Best Instructor” award at
Steven’s Institute of Technology, Flotilla Commander U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, certified
rescue diver, two-time Ironman, lectures at MIT on occasion, co-authored thesis producing
an automobile in India that gets 173mpg (out of MIT)— rounds out a wonderful set of
resources to better the arts community.

The response to the Fundamentals of Prenatal Yoga Teaching workshop invitation has been incredible. Thank you for being drawn to support, guide and inspire pregnant students and new moms. 🙏🏼

I want to understand where you are on your teaching path now, so I can support you better in the workshop.

Do you have a minute to answer one question?

If a pregnant person asked you to teach them a 20-minute practice right now, what would be your biggest worry or question?

You can reply with a sentence, a few words, or whatever comes to mind. I read and reply to every email.

And if you’re busy, no pressure to respond. I’m looking forward to connecting with you.

With gratitude and support,
Jessica
